Crutches, Boots and Scooters Part 4

After this week, I may be able to drop the boot.

I had my staples removed and all seems to be healing fine. I'll find out more info on 12/27 regarding weight bearing and rehab. My return to work is looking very Super Bowl week-ish and for me, I want to ensure I can wear work shoes and Brooks good and do regular activities first. I'm not going to rush this.

This past week was of course Christmas and things were well and festive leading up to those days. With COVID, flu and record low temperatures, I wasn't too disappointed about being shut-in.

I am doing more and more for myself and am still reading, watching sports and KendraG live. I can tell this is really getting to my mom. We do have help but she wants so much to be done at once and I wouldn't be able to at full health. She did cook Christmas dinner and I did some pickups.

I have found out how dry your feet get when you don't use them and that my front yard is basically sinking. Filling that hill area where I was injured and where two cars were stuck on a rainy Thursday are top priorities. I have noticed over the years that's a high risk area but I did not realize the danger of it. The backyard is similar at times.

This is of course the last post of 2022 also. Part 5 will be in a new year with hopefully new ways to walk, stand, balance and wear shoes.

Crutches, Boots, And Scooters Part 3 (The Gauze Edition)

This week was very relaxing and interesting. I felt less pain, slept more on a regular schedule as the pain meds are out of my system and got into the holiday spirit. It typically takes 21 days for a habit to kick in and now I'm on day 22 of being injured and shut in.

I would be lying if I said I didn't miss going to holiday parties along with the coffee shop, especially since this past Saturday was one of my circles annual holiday party. They all texted me that evening before the inebriation kicked in. The goal is this week is hopefully to get them on a formal group chat (COVID and some pushback against WhatsApp has held that up).

This was a good weekend to be stuck on my couch watching sports as it was one of the best sporting weekends (several great NFL games, World Cup final, Coach Prime's final game at Jackson State, Devin Booker's 59 point game, etc.) I've also gotten into Kendra G live and have been binging past episodes.

It hasn't been easy to keep busy and eat healthy on limited activity but I am doing it. I am out of work formally until 1/19 but my recovery may take longer. Stay tuned as I return to the doctor to have stitches removed, have a full Holiday week and do my own end of year stuff

Crutches, Boots and Scooters Part 2

This was a week where I started settling into a healthy routine and cadence following my surgery.

I had several calls and texts the first two days of the week from people checking on me and such. I also had several calls with medical professionals and the leave team with Amazon for housekeeping and business items.

I'm unsure if it was the meds I was given after surgery but I slept a lot the first two days as well. Talking to all of these people really wore me out as well along with using my crutches. My hallway is still congested but I started using the scooter around the house more and in the kitchen and it has made a difference. I love it! It's a challenge to transport but it's overall a solid piece of equipment for me.

I went to both of my post-op appointments on this past Thursday and the doctors were pleased with my progress. I'm out of the splint now and do not need to wear my boot all the time now. I was instructed to still not bear any weight on my foot until 12/27 which means no driving and definitely no walking nor standing. I was also instructed to run water (not submerge nor soak) on my foot daily and wrap the area where the stitches are daily. My stitches will be removed on next Monday the 19th.

Overall I've been catching up on reading, writing and television, eating healthier as I am more prone to gain more weight since I am not as physically active, and having positive vibes around me. This past weekend was quiet and relaxing and I liked that.

This upcoming week is the first since the injury where I don't have a scheduled appointment. I can finish my holiday shopping, continue to rest, and make the most of this opportunity. I do look forward to returning back to the coffee shop and other places I like to go. My scooter allows for that access.

Crutches, Boots and Scooters Chronicles Part 1

I'm going to do a weekly chronicle following my nasty, freak injury on November 27th. For those that I haven't contacted, I fell down the hill between my driveway and front porch when I got off from work. My left foot slipped underneath me and I came down in some mud as it was raining. I immediately heard a pop and then when I tried to get up, I came down again as I heard a snap. I tried once more to elevate myself but it was evident as the pain was throbbing that I wouldn't be able to walk into my own home. I had to crawl guerilla war style into my home up my porch and I elevated myself near my door enough to unlock it and come inside.

I then spent the next two days in Urgent Care and ER facilities. I learned that you don't go to urgent care for possible sprains nor fractures. By the time I left the ER on Monday afternoon, I was even more spent and tired. I had a sprained and dislocated ankle, a fractured fibia (calf) bone and surgery was pushed forward to this past Friday since I had developed infection and MRCA in my left big toe and amputation was necessary before the orthopedic specialist operated on my ankle.

I hadn't been hampered like this in my entire life. I am consistently a glass full type of guy but I have limited mobility aside from crutches, a walker and a foot controlled scooter that my friend gave me. I need assistance with so many things. I am missing out on my company's busiest season as I got the schedule that was more desirable to me and was training for a role that I was excited about performing. I am also at odds with my mother who is having a hard time grasping everything and doesn't adjust well to sudden change.

There are positives. I get much needed rest, others get to drive me for a change, I have lots of free time to blog, vlog, podcast, work on my turkey fryer and other delayed projects, and catch up on sports and streaming services. I have quite a village around me per #imjustdrew as I recover, recuperate and get back to full strength. I do not want this time to go wasted as apparently I have wasted time in the past.

This has been quite a week mostly spent on my reclining couch with my TV, cat, and resting. I have short and long term goals for the coming days and weeks but the #1 is to recover fully, adjust smoothly to these changes, and come out of this a much more physically and mentally stronger person.

Stay tuned for next week as I attempt to rearrange my home for accessibility purposes, I have post-op and attempt to cook for myself. I also need to brew some coffee as I haven't had any in over a week!

STARS: How I Have Survived Working 3rd Shift

I have a lot to be thankful for. One is actually returning to 3rd shift. I am in the middle of that transition as I write this.

I have been on 3rd shift 4 times in my life and am a night owl. However making the transition from working a day shift is a challenge.

I have dark curtains in my room and I notify my close friends, family and neighbors of my change. You may be suprised who tries to randomly call or visit the moment you begin working nights.

I keep plenty of caffeine, specifically Con Cafe coffee. Shane is not only a coffee genius; he's also a night owl. It's as if he combined those two to roast blends that work perfectly for a night shifter.

I have exercised early in the evenings to keep my heart rate going. It does work.

I eat but I do my best to refrain from heavy carbs or bread. That will drag your system and put you to sleep fairly fast.

I also maintain the same/similar schedule on my off nights. That's the biggest challenge.

Doing this has helped at four different jobs and positions and my circadian rhythm transitions smoothly from 2-4 weeks. Allow me to add to SLEEP! Some have to be up a while; others sleep as soon as they get home. One must sleep though.

STARS: How I Have Kept Myself Safe In Mass Social Interactions

We see another case of someone who trusted their so called friends too much and ended up dead. Hard to believe this happened just 5 years ago. Of course history does repeat itself. This is part of my #imjustdrew brand: being around folks that you not only receive good vibes from but that keep you safe.

My mom often worries when I travel or hang out for days at a time but she's a praying woman and trusts my judgment.

I am first off a loner and have my private time even when I'm having fun. I have a vetting process locally.  I see how folks interact with each other in public spots first. I also see how they interact when under the influence, how they talk about others, how they treat others. I then take this to how they behave in their own homes or the homes of others. I ALWAYS want to see how you are when others are watching and through conversing with you. If I see you don't care about my safety and well being, there's only so much and so long we are going to hang.

I wrote a chapter in "From Darkness To Sunshine" about the different types of friends. True enough, some are simply for partying and hanging out and that's all. What you have to be careful of is who to go out of town with and who else is around. That's something else I look at: where you like to hang out, what you do and the company you keep. It all has to link up and vibe, period. I've been invited to hang out with dozens of different types of people and events. I decline many due to the vibe and gut feelings being off.

I just came off of WU Homecoming 2022 and I hang regularly at Wisefire Cafe and I know a few people whose parties I will attend. These folks all share a common trait: they make me feel safe and welcome. That is a must for me. I have navigated the past 30 years and have a max of 12 such places where I feel that and one of those is my own home.

I may increase or decrease this number over the course of time but just know that I have a vetting process and I don't want to put myself into harm's way.

STARS: How I Have Kept Mental Health In Check

I have only taken full control of my mental health over the past 20 years and it hasn't been easy at all. I still struggle and have days but I look back and I'm not where I used to be.

I definitely think have Christ at the head of my life and enrich myself in understanding and practicing the Bible and His teachings. I also talk with like minded followers and stay plugged in to my mentors. The latter helps with every aspect of my life.

I ensure I see my therapist and stay on my medications. I seek any extra care as well. I practice self care, workout, have fun, and rest. I know keeping my mind healthy is key to keeping the body healthy as well. It's my energy.  Poetry, writing and podcasts are huge for me also.

I sleep through the night, I panic 60% less, am 100% more focused and am more happy and cheerful. I simply like being and feeling healthy and I am blessed to have a village that looks out for me when I'm not myself. I am valued, loved and needed.

STARS: How I Increased My Faith in Christ

Disclaimer: I am not trying to force anyone away from their home church or towards a church. This is my experience and what has worked best for me in my life. I do feel everyone that follows Jesus Christ should form a solid, personal relationship with Him though.

I have fought many internal battles in my life. One is my relationship and faith in Jesus Christ.

I was brought up in the church and attended for years and years. I became non-denominational in 2002 and although I have attended services and belong to a particular group, I realized I needed to become more spiritual and form a stronger bond with Christ.

I aligned myself with several similar minded followers and ministers. I'm blessed to have a network of both. I needed to be around those that understood that I wanted a deeper understanding that extended beyond church. I wanted to be a follower that did more than go to church 2-3 times/week, read the Bible daily and such. I needed understanding.

I have read the entire Holy Bible 3 times but I have went through an additional time to understand more of the Hebrew and Greek origins that apply today. Additionally, I have learned more about God being about love, grace and forgiveness and that you only come to the Father through His son.

I not only plug into spiritual services and podcasts, I am in a worship group called Ekklesia. This group has changed my life over the years as they have been an extension of the foundation I have developed but containing more of the discussion and understanding of the Word along with more open worship.

I now pray 10 times more than I did before, ensure I read my word in the mornings and throughout the day and that I remained plugged in to my network. I am not ashamed to pray, receive prayer and guidance and understanding. I want my relationship to continue to grow in Him as I can shine my light onto others and help them find their path.

STARS: How I Survived Living With a Drug Addict

I realize that several causes and philanthropies are going on in this great month of October. One is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Now while I haven't undergone domestic violence in any relationship, romantic, personal nor family, I have had to endure being around a drug addict: my brother Adam.

Many of you know of his troubles which eventually led him to leaving us 16 years ago. What many of you do not know what it was like for me to live with someone for 3 years that was abusing different types of drugs.

I will say respectfully it was a challenge on myself and my mother. Friends and other addicts around constantly, his behavior when he was intoxicated, the outbursts, stuff being stolen, etc. I had went from living on my own for 6 years to almost being like a prisoner in my own home that my mom made for both of us. This was definitely not my brother: it was a demon.

I had to get really creative with hiding food and snacks and even valuables. Adam would eat, steal and destroy anything he could. I had a spot in my closet where I hid belonging and food and made it difficult for him to get to. There were honestly things, even perishable foods, I found years later since I had forgotten them. All in all, I prevented him from consuming 50 snacks, destroying and stealing 25 shirts, 15 pairs of shorts and ten pairs of pants.

Adam did better with my shoes as he really did not mess with those. I had to pretty much stay in my room 90% of the time watching TV and movies. I would stay gone on weekends and even late some weekdays to avoid confrontation. I knew when he was knocked out from a Xanax binge that the next 48 hours would be Hell for us. I did all I could to stay out of the way. We did have a couple of run ins though. I was stabbed once, two more times I fought and beat him up and got him sent to jail on domestic violence. I heard a good quote in Cobra Kai: " best defense is no be there." I definitely did this for 3 years until he started getting cleaner.

I certainly do not have all of the answers here. This is simply my survival story and how I was able to have normalcy and peace during a tough period in my life. I definitely encourage anyone undergoing this to find every avenue to help a person that's addicted to drugs. You may have to place them in a shelter, home or facility but being in your home is a definite challenge. You have to be there as much as possible but 1. Protect your own peace first and 2. Realize that everyone isn't going to be receptive to health. That's when you must separate yourself from this person. I had to do it this way and I pray it's easier if it occurs again.

STARS: How I Built My Infamous Cup Collection

Another thing that folks are learning about me is my passion and meticulous nature regarding collecting cups and bottles. I own over 50 different types of cups and bottles and I may drink out of five of them.

I have been physically active and going to the gym off and on for 18 years so I've always kept at least two water/shake bottles there. Although I worked for Robert Allen for 12 years, I didn't start acquiring excess bottles until I started running long distance and working for Amazon.

Through both of these outlets, I have literally been given numerous cups and bottles. I couldn't drink out of all of them and didn't want to throw them away. Therefore, I sanitized and collected these as well.

I find random water bottles at work and I keep collectible bottles and cups and also sanitize those. I have accumulated so many cups I'm cleaning off another table for them. Many are simply in a box as of current.

I like always having a bottle or cup handy as I have more than 50 in my home, one main one I drink from for work, a QT cup in my trunk and two bottles for the gym and fitness. Yep I know.

STARS: How I Have Improved Sunday Funday Over The Years

Sunday Funday was birthed about a decade ago when folks got out of the tradition of going to church or watching football all day. It's a good day to do fun stuff for many reason and of course to relax with family and friends.

For me, it's mostly been church and football and for a period Snapped.  I have tripled my activity level over the past decade.

I make it a point to frequent Wisefire, Liberty Coffee or both. I simply love the vibe and it's almost as good if not better than a Friday night.

I love going to the movies and/or hang in a downtown like Spartanburg, Charlotte or Rock Hill. It's a lot of fun and many have bought into the Sunday Funday concept.

Many of my friends and family have realized that Saturdays can get crowded so they will have activities and kickbacks on Sundays.

I have also attended fairs, carnivals, cruise-ins, concerts,  or tried new restaurants on a Sunday. I have so many options and I try to use that as my fun day of the week now. It should be interesting on Halloween weekend this year since Halloween is on a Monday.

I make the most of life and good vibes and a day once considered restricted and even mundane bow has life to begin the new week ahead!

STARS: How I Get In Self-Care Free or Nearly Free

DISCLAIMER: while many of the mentioned activities do not have extra costs, there are some like gas and perhaps time.

Self care is paramount to remaining in a healthy headspace and being ready to face life's various challenges.

One doesn't always need to spend a ton of money or any money to achieve this peace of mind either.

I have several outlets I use right from my home. Bear in mind I live in the country but this works also for the suburbs or city limits. I take naps, read, write, watch inspirational TV and movies, take a warm bath in grape juice (don't knock it, it's better than Epsom salts), take walks, go hiking, do various sorts of exercise including yoga, declutter and purge areas of my home, listen to good, soothing music, podcasts, record my own podcast  #imjustdrew, do yard work, play with my animals, visit neighbors, call/text/video chat with friends and family, attend church or spiritual services, coffee shop (cost a little bit but not enough to break the bank), look at old photos and memorabila from yesteryear, take photos of anything outside or inside, sit in the dark and mediate and focus, practice regular mantras, and look at sunrises, sunsets and the different moons.

These are just a few I have in rotation but the total cost is often $0.00 to do these activities and I am a much more refreshed and recharged person..

STARS: How I Got My #ImJustDrew Podcast Started

I have honestly wanted to do radio and/or a podcast for years. I became fascinated in college and shortly thereafter watching my close friend The Mario Washington and his success in radio and such.

It seemed for a while you needed all of this fancy equipment, a studio and a certain time frame to be able to do it all. Thanks to technology advancements, I finally got my own off the ground without all of that.

I have watched podcasting literally explode the past five years. There are so many people that have a voice, content and a microphone. I like to be practical when I choose a hobby also.

I watched two local podcasters "Gping Places With Camden and Daniel" and "Be Great Today" with Coach Josh Batchler. I appeared on the Going Places podcast in late July and learned about Anchor FM. Anchor is awesome for starting a podcast, distributing, recording and producing. It's also free.

I bought a microphone off of Amazon, created a logo from Canta and started recording. I am now 2 and a half episodes in with episode 3 set to record this week. I plan to do one per week as my schedule allows and it's been awesome so far.

I have 15 views and 2 subscribers, small numbers to start. It's better than zero where I did start. I'm glad this is finally live and I look forward to having guests and even recording some episodes in studios I have access to opposed to my home.

STARS: How I Survived One Of WU's Toughest Majors

I graduated from Winthrop University nearly 22 years ago with a B.S. in Computer Science, minor in Business Administration. Let me tell you: Computer Science was one of the toughest majors at the entire university.

Many majored thinking of the earning potential and honestly because of gaming at that time. Little did they realize that there is a lot of math and theory involved within.  Therefore, there was lots of turnover in that major within the first 2 years.

I nearly crashed and burned myself but I was determined to see this through and did. I was making Cs in some classes and had to drop two classes due to nearly failing them. Not many knew about the last part.

I sought out folks that were better than me at this subject and grasped it well. This is still what I practice to this day: find someone better and see if they will help you. I did this and we had study groups. I formed a lot of connections that I still have to this day.

I also changed advisors to one that really got me on the proper track to success and graduation and career advice. I plugged into my professors, staying in their office even outside of their office hours. I wasn't going down easily. I went from making Cs and even Ds and below to having a B or better in all of my remaining courses except for one. I really learned my craft, how to program and the inner workings of it all.

This knowledge and education wasn't initially wasted either. I landed 4 different jobs in my field shortly following graduation. I ended up leaving the field and focusing on the business side and eventually earned my MBA and am now in management with Amazon. I still take pride in how I fought in that tough major and exceled in and out of the classroom.

STARS: How To Start If You Want to Become An Author

It's hard to believe I have been a published author for 4 and a half years now.  It's been a dream and a bucket list item for me.

Many have asked how did I get started and publish this book.  I will tell my story and give pointers for those willing to do what is necessary to make this happen.

I needed to pick a platform that catered to independent, first time authors. I chose Lulu because I watched the late Peggy McDaniel Lutz have success with them. CreateSpace with Amazon is also a good one to use. Both have tools once your content is complete to design the size, page count, overall layout and even cover.

I spent six months with a rigid one chapter per week (sometimes 2) schedule to construct my content. I then submitted my content for initial approval. I made necessary editorial changes which between that, marketing, headshot; procuring my cover (I contracted an independent artist/friend for that), it was another 6 months before the book was ready to publish.

I also looked at the prices on Lulu and saw which packages fit my budget the best. Understand that with the first book, many are not going to break even. I used some monies I gained from a 3rd party source to fund my book expenses. I would say prepare to spend $1,000-$2,500 for your first book. This also includes distributing your book for sale to Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other such bookstores.

I then completed all that was needed for the book and ordered 200 copies based off of pre ordered primarily and for book launches.  I ordered another 200 once those were gone.

I'm proud to say that overall to date the book has grossed over 300 copies in sales with folks still wanting to order online or purchase a copy for me. Therefore if being an author is a passion of yours, just know it takes work and dedication but it's doable. You have to want it though.

Drew's Rule Book

I'm going to take a break from the STARS posts at least for a couple of weeks as I undergo some professional and personal transitions.

I posted a while ago about my personal instruction manual. Well I decided in the spirit of the show P-Valley and Uncle Clifford, decided to post my own rule book for life.

1. Love the Lord
2. Love others
3. Love yourself
4. Stop spoiling shows and movies
5. Be respectful and act the way you want to be treated
6. Allow common sense and reason to be your guide
7. Always look and think forward; look at the windshield rather than the rearview mirror
8. Remember you don't lose; you win or you learn.
9. Treat every relationship you have seriously and don't cheat
10. Keep yourself educated. If you don't know, dedicate yourself to finding out.
11. Get your "me" time
12. Stand up for yourself.
13. Check your bags at any restaurant, even if they wrap up the bag
14. Leave Meineke, KFC, Starbucks, Dunkin, Planet Fitness, Applebees and any such evil, useless chain alone (I will only go to Applebees to support two servers I know)
15. Krispy Kreme is better than Dunkin or Duck Donuts. Stop fighting it just because other places put bacon on your doughnut
16. Bacon goes with almost anything
17.  Walmart should be 24 hours again (more of a request)
18. Taxation is theft. Prove me wrong
19. Liking a politician is like liking an exotic dancer. Many only want your money
20. Social media doesn't necessarily make you a good family member, activist, singer, athlete or social influencer
21. Don't go into anyone's else house causing drama
22. Don't invite anyone to your home that you wouldn't hang out with in public
23. Be honest with others and yourself
24. Tell a person how you feel, tactfully
25. Answer the relevant messages
26. Declutter and purge certain areas of your life as necessary
27. Be consistent in your daily actions and behaviors.
28. Seek medical attention when you need it.
29. Be healthy physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.
30. Don't leave a person behind, whether at a party or social gathering. We have too many ways to communicate; remind and let them know what's going on.
31. Don't forget your friends and family's birthdays. Get a special calendar if need be.
32. Do not ever waste food unless it's spoiled
33. Don't intentionally and ignore me for no reason.
34. Don't go ghost without letting me know. That's the parental instinct in me.
35. Please come correct and respectful to me. Talk to me and not at me.
36. If you're going to talk about me, have your facts straight
37. Don't question my work ethic. 27 years and 12 and 7 with the same company speak for themselves.
38. Don't mess with the main Fs" family, food, finances

STARS: How I learned how to play offensive line at 16

Some of you know I didn't start playing football until I was 15 and really wanted to get onto the field and play by my second year. I saw the future and that my best chance to see the field was to learn the offensive line positions. We would be short my senior year. It was tough but I was determined to accomplish this.

I watched lots of game film and not just Blacksburgs but college and the NFLs to prepare for my form, explosions, stance and stamina. I worked out in the weight room religiously the spring and summer prior: dropping 40 pounds so I could have more lean muscle, increasing my benchpress by 50 pounds and my overall stamina by lifting and running the track and bleachers 3 times per week for 7 months. I also learned our playbook and how to block for certain plays properly and use my hands instead of my forearms. I knew I would be a better asset if I knew the granular details.

I developed myself even more as the season began. I was named starting offensive left tackle but I had to learn to be still during the snap count and know the snap count to not get offsides. I also had to block, period or I would be back on the bench. 3 scrimmages a jamboree and 12 games later, I kept my position, kept improving and was a reliable blocker and teammate.

I encourage anyone wanting to go out for a position you love to do it if you have both the skill and opportunity. Offensive line was tough to learn but I did and on a high level.

STARS: How I Saved Sunday Dinner

It's August! I have been coming up with many good writing and other creative ideas.

Many of you know my mom is fighting Father Time as she has a lot of mobility problems that keep growing. One of the things she can no longer do is cook Sunday dinner, one of her pleasures. I can but she doesn't like some of the stuff I cook. It would take a lot for me to cook a full Sunday dinner, especially since I work late on Saturdays and I am often tired.

We lived on fast food and sandwiches for a while due to proximity to restaurants with quality home cooked meals.

I checked, researched and taste tested many places in the area to avoid fast food and to ensure we all had a good Sunday meal that I could bring home. I currently go to three places that meet this criteria and are open on a Sunday closeby: York Family Seafood, Clover Station and Sandy's Chew Chew Soul Food. These are all 3 local small businesses that offer full, home-cooked meals.

I have found that part of adulting is outsourcing certain parts of your daily life. I'm very blessed that there are restaurants that allow my mom to have her Sunday meal weekly. She doesn't ask for much, never has. Therefore it pleases me that I can provide this for her and myself.

STARS: How I Write Poetry

I am into more poetry now that my guy, Angelo Geter, has released his book, More God Than Dead. He also had an awesome book launch a couple of weeks back.

Many of you know I've been writing myself for well over 25 years. I've even performed slam poetry before. Angelo's release has inspired me to get back out there.

I have a very different process for writing my poems than much.

I brainstorm the topic and the emotions first. You have to really feel poetry opposed to prose. This is why I begin with the title and let it flow.

I have a format of four lines per stanza or even two. I and other great poets advise you have a foundation far as writing but remember that all poems do not have to rhyme. I simply make sure mine flow well even if they don't rhyme.

I then read my poems aloud for that effect. Big shout out to folks at the WU like Pamela Pressley Sharpe, Que Gore and Quentin Talley. All 3 taught me that expressing from the heart and showing the emotion really helps gives your words life.

I also don't worry if I go over anyone's heads. Poetry is met to be interpretive and have multiple meanings.

I encourage you to read many poems, including Angelo's books and definitely develop that foundation. You may be a poet and not know it!

STARS: How I Househop (go to multiple places and homes)

We're in peak party and cookout season. Most weekends you will have several different events and functions going on and of course you can't go to everything. I have been able to attend most events through careful planning and precision.

I look at the times of each event, the proximity and any overlap or gap. I try to eat heaviest (if there's food) at the first gathering and the next to last gathering (sometimes it's the last). I don't stay longer than 2-3 hours at any place to allow for travel and debriefing. My plan works best of all of the events are in the same city or neighboring cities. If I want to attend something further away, I adjust the time at the previous event and sometimes eat and drink more.

I have been doing this for over 20 years. For events (including holidays), my personal best is 6 houses(places) per day. It makes for a long day but well worth it when I want to see and be around certain folks.

STARS: How I Learned How To Swim

I have been blogging for 12 years. By now you all know how country I am if you don't know anything else.

Growing up we didn't have a pool nor knew really anyone that did and there weren't any waterparks close so we went to the local creek mostly.  It was peaceful, fun and deep.

I had to learn to swim if I not only wanted to live but but be able to have fun. Also, my mom didn't pay for any fancy swimming lessons and I still learned at the age of 7.

I went to the creek at least 3-4 times per week during the summer months. My mom would try and go early or even late on a weekday to avoid crowds. I started in shallow waters and worked my way to the deeper areas. I would simply stroke left, then stroke right with my arms and keep moving my legs in an up and down formation. I advise regardless of your method or teacher to not stop moving those legs. They are your lifeline. I also had goggles and a life vest.

I got really good over the years and did not lose this skillset, even as I traveled to rivers, oceans and pools.  I l started learning how to swim more smoothly by not splashing so much and being more fluid.  I am now 43, soon to be 44 and can still swim well.

I realize everyone learns differently but my method was very informal, cost effective and it mostly involved good form and reps.

STARS: On The Way Back- Part 8

I was now working in Greenville, SC as a delivery driver trainer. I loved everything about the job and station except for the commute. I drove some days up to an 1 hour and 30 minutes one way to get to work. It was all good as I had a plan.

The plan was to put myself in position to get promoted to an L4 position and eventually a remote position within Amazon. Once COVID happened, many of these positions were opening up network wide.

I was getting set up for success through my two managers at the station, my HR rep, my Learning Area Manager and many others from other Amazon facilities. This was a process I had not experienced before. It was still the STAR method but this time you had two interviews back to back with a brief intermission. The tricky part was both interviewers had to vote in your favor for you to receive an incline. There could not be a split or tie.

I worked weekly on my interview questions and stories to fit them into the STAR method with good metrics and the leadership principles. I narrowed my stories down to 20 solid ones that could fit many of the commonly asked questions. I had mock interviews with managers and HR reps I didn't know so I could receive more unbiased feedback. All feedback was good but hearing from a 3rd party was extra helpful.

It took me 3 sets of the dual interviews and honing my answers and delivery but I earned my incline and offer to become an Assistant Station Manager at CLT6! It was a promotion, raise, and a much better commute.  I would miss DSC3 as I had more fun there than my previous sites, got to train and learn the AMZL flow and even got paid to travel on Amazon's dime.

I am now 7 months into my role and there have been challenges. I feel I have did well overall. I am setting goals for myself to tackle the next challenge. I feel I have come a long way but the best is still yet to come!

STARS: On The Way Back: Part 7

I was flying high emotionally, being in my first leadership role within Amazon and first paid leadership role in nearly two decades.

I loved everything about being in a new building from my team, my leadership and the folks I trained.

However the tide started turning in the year that is 2020 and it was getting time to start thinking about advancement or lateraling to another position. I thought long and hard and actually loved my job and all. It was other factors that led to me thinking of a new role.

I had mentioned the timeframe: 2020, when COVID was rampant without any vaccines. Masks everywhere. Numerous mandates. Little to no fans at sporting events. Also, many restrictions at work that added challenges. I needed to be in a smaller environment or in a virtual role. My mother was also growing older and very high risk.  I needed to reduce my stress level and peace of mind

I looked into AMZL the delivery station with the infamous Amazon vans. It was smaller and had a different flow than FCs. Plus it was a better schedule for me, my family and my career development. I had connections from GSP1 that helped me make that lateral move to DSC3 in Greenville, SC.  I would still be able to train, which is what I love doing the most, and I would have a third of the restrictions and a smaller team. It's what I needed at that time. I was going from an AR building with 4,000 to a small delivery station of about 400.

I applied, researched, weighed the options and was happy to become a delivery driver trainer and be back in Upstate SC. I had grown so much in the past year and was ready for the next chapter in my Amazon journey.

STARS: On The Way Back: Part 6

I was finally feeling more productive, appreciated and noticed at Amazon. I was feeling the optimism of growing as I did in 2015.

I became a Learning Ambassador, later a Learning PIT Ambassador where I DID get trained to drive every piece of PIT equipment so I could train others. I was on the Safety Committee, Activities Committee, and I was getting praise and admiration from many leaders, particularly my direct manager and my Learning Coordinator. Things were finally looking up.

Now I was ready to level up and advance to the next level (Tier 3) in Amazon terms. This was yet another challenge that took a year to achieve.

I learned the STAR interview method (Situation, Task, Action and Results). I practiced it through mock interviews, talking with my leaders/mentors and even geared this blog towards that purpose.  The STAR method is utilized by many major companies with great results so I knew mastering it would be extra advantageous.

I also applied for jobs not only within the Spartanburg center but also at the ones in Charlotte.  They have 10 different centers/sites to work for and it gave me more options. 3 were launch(new) sites and that would give me more of a leg up.

I had 4 interviews before my first incline (meaning that I could be placed in that role within a year without interviewing again and was a finalist).  I then had 2 more interviews before I earned the Learning PIT Trainer role at the newest Amazon center in Charlotte near the airport.  I was over the moon!

I know by now you all are knowing there is more and you would be right. I earned my first leadership role within Amazon and not my last. It felt fulfilling that the 4 year wait and my hard work was paying off.

STARS: On The Way Back: Part 5

Some could say I was already back since I was making more money, had a good schedule, great commute, benefits and such when I left RA and went to Amazon. I wanted more from Amazon though.

I found that during that time, it seemed more common for at least the building I worked at during that time to hire folks straight out of school for the management and leader positions. I was okay with working up the ranks and climbing the ladder.  I would understand the overall process and flow of the fulfillment center anyways.

However, even that was a challenge my first two years there. I suffered through a lack of support, leadership looking over me, and not being cross trained nor given the opportunities to train or to be groomed nor molded. I was just a regular worker and there is nothing wrong with that. I felt I wasn't getting a fair shake. I even won Employee of the Month for the entire company.

I spoke up and reached out at roundtables, participated in connection calls regarding my managers and even met 1:1 with senior leadership. I simply wanted to be given a chance and at worse have an opportunity to do other jobs within the building.

Two years had passed and I was only on the appeals board and my current manager kept lying to my face about getting me cross trained. I then went over his head and even called Ethics and corporate. I was tired of it and I wasn't going to sit by and take it like many others had before me. My goal was to show that advancement and cross training were possible.

I saw more optimism and results as I was plugged in FINALLY to leadership and folks that were dedicated to helping me grow. The manager I reported did recommend me to be a Learning Ambassador (trainer). That's where the story will continue for next time.

STARS: On The Way Back: Part 4

I was having a rebirth working in Sample Distribution. I was on an awesome team with great managers/mentors. It felt like the early RA again. The paychecks didn't add up and I knew I couldn't stay for long but I was enjoying this in between periods.

I had to get a job where I didn't have to pull from my 401K or credit cards. I would maintain a couple of side hustles though.

The time changed in 2014 when one of my managers changed departments and I knew the new manager and I wouldn't have the best rapport. That's when I got heavy on the job search again. I kept widening it when I would get fussed at or my integrity was tested.  I narrowed my choices down to BMW and Amazon. BMW weeded me out quickly in a screening. I applied for Amazon an hour later in a parking lot in my hot car. Within a month, I received a schedule, wage agreement, start date, etc.  I was FINALLY leaving Robert Allen after 12 years!

It felt bittersweet as I actually had matured into a different man during that time and made many strong connections. I cherish the time and people there but it was time for another adventure. This would be an adventure where I would get paid more, would get 40 hours/week and I could use my education.

Of course, I learned quickly it wasn't as easy as I thought to advance but definitely a reality.

STARS: On The Way Back: Part 3

Part 2 ended with much optimism: steady pay at RA, finally in grad school for my MBA and simply feeling good.

However, life always has other plans.

I did earn my MBA in May 2009. However a recession began and I had zero to no job prospects in the accounting, finance or management world. Also, RA reduced my hours from 40 to 36 to 32, dropping my overall pay by $100/week on some weeks.

I had just bought my Cobalt and was struggling to keep that. I had to take out two separate loans, one on my 401K, to keep ends met. I then decided in 2011 after over 2 years of struggling financially, I was ready for to really leave RA. I left the Cut Floor after 6 years and went to the Sample Book Fabrication department (SBF). I didn't loose much money due to how the incentive program had shifted against me and I felt a lot better internally.

I then realized in 2012 after one too many altercations with my manager, who had also been my Cut Floor manager that it was time for me to once again think outside of the box. I would have to go to another plant or the like that would pay more, even if it meant longer hours and even weekend work. I could no longer take lower wages and a toxic work environment. I also looked at side hustles, especially with my writing, to make ends meet.

I connected with many former managers and colleagues like never before. I was determined to get to a point of financial and personal happiness.

I reached the personal happiness first as I transferred departments to the Sample Distribution department that I worked briefly with as a temp in 2003. That's more for Part 4 but either way it would be a healthier spot to stay in while I found more gainful employment elsewhere. I also got to work for 2 of the best managers I had ever had. This healing and motivation still drives me to this very day.

STARS: On The Way Back: Part 2

I worked at Robert Allen (RA) considering it a short term assignment while I constantly tried to find more fulfilling employment, preferably in my major. My goal was to go to grad school, earn my MBA and try that route also. That will be the story for Part 3 though.

Part 2 will focus on how I was able to make more money as the current job I had didn't even pay $9, although I got overtime and decent benefits. I had to get some gainful income at RA or elsewhere.

I focused on every type of job in my major I could but to no avail. LinkedIn nor major social media wasn't a thing so I used my connects. I then decided to take the PRAXIS and GMAT and aced both exams. I decided to become a critical area needs teacher in SC. I could do that and the closest area was an hour away.

I then looked at the salary and even after receiving my master's or MBA, it would take years to earn my goal employment of $15/hour (ironically what many jobs pay now). I didn't want to be in another plant nor mill. Robert Allen had adopted the incentive program for the Cut Floor department. In essence you were paid for your production and had a base pay and average pay. I was cross trained on the Cut Floor and was confident I could do the work. However I knew it would be hard on my body.

I caved in 2005 and decided to do it as another short term assignment so I could afford more things in my life: new car; own place and even to vacation. It paid heavy dividends for 3 years as I made very good money on just 40 hours/week and had a good balance where I wasn't greedy nor harming my body more than necessary.

I felt more productive and my confidence boosted as I actually matched my income I made working for the WU and exceeded that I would have made as a teacher.

There were more changes that came as I started grad school in 2008, bought a new car and saw more positive things in my life.

STARS: On The Way Back: Part 1.

I hope this multi part series can help and uplift someone that may be struggling and can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Two decades ago, I had to start from scratch and focus on my personal health. I was young and unsure what to do to move forward.

I allowed myself to rest, found good specialists to heal and recover.  I then plugged into Vocational Rehab in Gaffney, SC. I had a degree and job experience but due to not having a car of my own at that time and other factors, I could not break back into my career field. Therefore, I had to think outside of the box.

I went for an avenue that would accommodate my skillset and limitations. A month in after acceptance into their work-skills program, I had two temp offers. One was the Robert Allen Group in Gaffney. I had not heard of them before that time.

On June 4, 2003, I began as a temp worker for Robert Allen and Voc Rehab was funding my pay. On October 13 of the same year, RA hired me full time.

I would go on to have job and financial stability as I stayed with the company 12 years. This is just where the story begins though.

STARS: How I kept the pharmacies from shorting me on my pills

I realize the title really shows my age. Many of us need regular prescriptions for some sort of affliction. I need 4 currently and hope to knock that down to 2 by the end of this year.

I got shorted on a controlled substance I take and anyone knows if you don't get the proper dosage of that, those withdrawals can have dangerous effects. Here's how I mitigated that risk. Also, this will do for any pharmacy.

I bought myself a pill counter container 3 years ago after the incident and my doctor being kind enough to write me another prescription and trust me. I count my pills into that container everytime I get that particular medication.

3 years later, I've only been shorted once and I caught them on it right away. They were courteous, admitted their mistake and gave me the proper amount.

Moral of the story is treat your medications like your money. I know I don't ever leave the bank or ATM without counting my money. I also do not leave a pharmacy without counting my pills either and you shouldn't.

STARS: Surviving High Gas Prices

I'm not flattered to say I have experienced these types of problems twice before I turn 44. It does give me field experience regarding how I have survived and thrived through many unprecedented times.

I have learned to budget for gas higher than $3/gallon. It's now $4/gallon in my area and could increase to $5 soon. I consistently fill up at the halfway point. I have made sure I purchased gas efficient vehicles. If you can get a vehicle with an eco option, do it! It's a long term gas saver.

I also enroll in every gas saving program I can: GasBuddy and Ingles Rewards are two of the ones that stay in my rotation. I was in Bi-Lo's program prior to them folding. I try to do my errands in one trip or while I am out on my work commute. I try to travel smarter and more strategically.

I filled up at the pump just yesterday as gas hit the $4 mark and got $32.26. I am carving out a weekly budget of $85, $250/month. Therefore, I have already pre-planned for that.

There are no two ways around this: it sucks. Many of us have to drive and thus have to get gas. Therefore you may as well save up, enroll in saver programs and be strategic. This too shall pass!

STARS: Social Media Promotions and Marketing

I will post these types of blogs as long as they are necessary. Mistakes will be made, everyone will not find out about your event. You still have to figure out what to do to increase your efficiency and percentages.

The goal I have is not to have anyone locally that's on all of the social media platforms often to say they didn't know.

I go hard, relentlessly and vigorous in my promotions, starting early and often. I manipulate the algorithm to my favor, ensure it's visible if it's a public event. I also have multiple people doing the inviting, which means inviting all of their friends and then their friend's friends. I do this early and often.

I ensure that my pictures of the event are shared daily in stories, posts. I post during the peak hours: mornings and evenings and days (Sunday evenings through Thursday nights). I discovered that's when folks are checking out what's in the air.

I have also found Eventbrite to be an awesome source.  Outsiders may moss ads but they can subscribe to Eventbrite notifications and know months in advance.

I have seen this work and have attendance increase by 50%, complaints reduce by 75% and overall visibility is at 100%. I don't ever want to be mad at the results from the work I didn't do. Read that twice.

STARS: How I started reading more

I had gotten out of reading basically and this wasn't a great trait as an author. I continued to read articles, blogs and such but I wasn't reading any books anymore.  Those that know me best know this was different for me.

I began supporting my fellow author friends, which helped me to read more books. I know 20 people that have released their own books and I have read most of their works. I hang out at a coffee shop/bookstore and have bought more than 50 books wholesale. I also joined the WU virtual book club just before the pandemic two years ago and am now about to begin book number 11 with them. All in all, I have read 30 books over the past 5 years by reading a chapter or a few pages daily. This keeps me active and sharp here.

I will continue my activity in my book club and supporting local and favorite authors.

STARS: My Turnaround in high school grades and rank

I always wanted to attend college but like many families, I couldn't afford it without financial assistance. I would definitely need scholarships.

My grades were good but not great in 9th and 10th grade. I was ranked around 15th in my class and struggled in math and science classes.

I attended Upward Bound the summer before my junior year. I got the motivation and outlet I needed for high school and beyond. I had study skills class, SAT prep, and classes involving all of my subjects I would be taking in the school year.

This continued during the school year as I went once/month for continued assistance and review on my coursework from current teachers, college professors and other students.

I then studied properly and my grades went from the occasional A or two, Bs and the occasional C or two to straight As my final two years of high school. My class ranking shot to 6th, I was inducted into the National Beta Club, graduated with honors, and earned almost enough scholarships and financial aid to fund my 4 and a half years of college at a fine university (Winthrop University, go Eagles!).

This is encouragement for high school seniors trying to finish strong and all underclassmen trying to make it happen. You can do it!

STARS: How I Keep My Overall Mental Health in Check

20 years ago, I was a mess.  I am not perfect now but I feel better internally. I let too much stuff hinder me and felt too much undo pressure. It took much of my 20s but I finally reached a happy place.

I had to really admit I had problems. I sought out professional help, went on proper medications (I have adjusted both over the years based on need and efficiency). I have engaged in more fun, thought provoking activities. I ensure I get my proper rest. I relax my brain and mediate. I also develop a healthy balance between personal, professional and social engagements. I no longer over exert myself, use "No" effectively and I get my me time. I also have a great circle and good barometers that keep me in check and level..

I have been able to maintain well the past two decades and not only not have any episodes, I have also helped others conquer their demons and find peace.

STARS: How I Play and Excel at Wordle

Wordle is the newest game to take 2022 by storm. 5 squares, 6 guesses, no ads, completely free. Very addictive also. So addictive that if you have an imitation downloaded on your phone that you practice with, I wouldn't delete it because both Android and iPhone have been sweeping the other apps.

I have kept my streak going by developing a plan and not blindly guessing.  I have two words that I use for the first two guesses to get my vowels narrowed and some key consonants. I may have 5 letters but I know I will at least have one.

I then utilize process of elimination and take advantage of the fact that I have 24 hours to get this completed. I actually do have an app I use for practice (I won't say which one on here) and have formed many word combinations. I will say that common ones like st are good. Also a letter can be repeated if it's in yellow. This is useful in those cases that I only have one vowel.

During the first three guesses, I do my best not to repeat a letter so I can narrow as many letters down and their placement. We all love the green letters but I will settle for the yellows. It's not a sprint but a marathon.

I have managed to stay unbeaten thus far in 2022, including 5 guesses on the final try. I only have 2 misses on the secondary app.

STARS: Early Anger Management

ONE typically doesn't resolve to work on their anger and self control (unless it's eating or spending) at the beginning of a New Year. I had to at the young age of 11.

I was bullied often in the sixth grade and got into 4 fights, all from defending myself. I was told by the principal that if I were sent to the office again for fighting, I would be suspended.

I had to learn how to walk away, ignore senseless comments and remarks. I also used my resources such as the teacher and of course my mother. I learned to fight off of school grounds when I had to fight. I had a goal of going to college and graduating and I didn't want to jeopardize this by staying in fights and not being able to control my anger.

31 years and two college degrees later, I overcome that. I did attend anger manager as an adult but I have managed to stay out of trouble and remain cool in times of crisis and despair.
