The Deck at 260 Volume 54

October is almost over sadly and it's one of the best times to hang on the deck.

Homecoming battle, 24 team playoff, perfect attendance award, dark college football weekend

Gaffney's Homecoming/birthday was this past weekend and per always a fun and exciting week. I see the folks down in the Pee Dee area stating Wilson has the best high school Homecoming at least in South Carolina.  As I stated last year on the deck, one day I'll get down to Wilson to form my own thoughts. Meanwhile I like it when we can simply enjoy the Homecomings we know and not try to compare too hard.

I like the current college football playoff system. Some were afraid it would take away from the regular season (although playoffs are the norm in every sport). In a weekend like we had with so many highly ranked teams losing, it's always interesting to see where they land and how this will affect the season long term. However 24 teams will make the playoffs too broad, the regular season more insignificant and guess what deserving teams will still get left out? Just a thought there.

I was at one point all for the perfect attendance awards at school and even the workplace. However as diseases and illness continues to spread I don't think we should normalize it as much anymore. I'm speaking to the schools especially with e-learning being more of a concept. There needs to be less encouragement towards perfect attendance as that isn't the healthiest behavior.

See you all next week!

The Deck at 260 Volume 53

Back after a six day layoff and transitioning to another work shift. Gaffney Homecoming is on the horizon (which we will be discussing, Halloween in 2 weeks)

Aja v Moore, Homecoming battle, Buffie the Body, Doing Life, Clover v Lake Wylie, roller coasters

A'ja Wilson won her 3rd consecutive league MVP and fifth overall. She won't win a WNBA championship this season but now the GOAT talk intensifies with the likes of Cheryl Swoopes, Maya Moore, etc (CC and Angel Reese haven't been playing long enough yet, give them time).

Gaffney Homecoming (Gaffney's birthday) is this week/weekend. It's always a huge event that spans 2-3 days. It has even prompted the city of Gaffney to require those having adjoining cookouts within town limits to obtain a permit from the city (another topic). It's always a debate whether who in SC has the better high school Homecoming: Gaffney or Wilson? It seems it depends whether you're from the Upstate or the Pee Dee. I debated with two Gaffney guys I knew (and a woman I had never met). I brought in a source: someone that had worked in both areas. Now what started as a good natured debate nearly turned ugly. I will just say this, you can like what you want to like (especially since it's your school). However my brain has a difficult time processing the words "no high school Homecoming is better than ours." Don't worry Gaffney faithful, I tell Wilson folks this also. I hope to make it to a Wilson Homecoming next year or soon after because I truly enjoy Gaffney's Homecoming.  I am just not going to say it's the best Homecoming. Best in football or peaches, you have numbers to back that claim up.

2000s video vixen Buffie the Body has come out basically saying she concealed her age during her modeling era and actually is in her 60s perhaps 50s at youngest. I want to know why everyone is pressed about that interview? Buffie is still a social media and YouTube sensation with her workouts and landscaping (fully clothed these days and happily married). This isn't whether or not Buffie said that to get her former audience's attention.  It's whether or not you were tuning in and why does her age matter?

Netflix/Tyler Perry seem to be on a streak that may last the remainder of the year. Doing Life was one of those movies I might pay to see in the theater and I watched it twice. It makes a person believe in love again despite loose storyline holes. I would definitely like to see a sequel since Carousel and Anika became such a great couple. It's awesome when two folks can let their "hands off the brakes", and follow their hearts.

The most exciting part about the weekend in my area had to be the inaugural Clover/Lake Wylie football game. I had a competing priority or I would have been there. To see the community come together through the pictures and videos was beautiful. The town of Clover is so near and dear to my heart and Lake Wylie has grown so much the past 20 years.  I cannot wait until both teams are more evenly matched and we have games like we see in Rock Hill and Spartanburg.

I have been dropping a lot of weight the past year but I am still not below 300 yet. That means I haven't ridden a roller coaster since 2019. Given how often the rides at Carowinds stay broken down (a friend of #imjustdrew Josh Erwin actually got stuck on a roller coaster back in the summer) and the recent death of the man at Six Flags Over Georgia I can wait on the roller coasters. I am excited to get back into the 200s but I'll hold off on riding these rides.

Ok although I will be working I will give a recap of Gaffney Homecoming.  Hopefully I can do it in a civil manner because I know folks will be cutting up on and off social media.

The Deck at 260: Volume 51 (October is here)

There's no debating what my favorite month of the year is. Here we go with an exciting 4 weeks!

-Shane Beamer
- High School Football
- Christina Pike
- Lindsay Clancy (again)
- Fair season
- MLB playoffs
- Blacksburg small town support

Ok this one is fresh off the press. I was just thinking also when Steve Spurrier's run was over and how he stepped down to avoid the inevitable. While I'm watching Clemson v Miami and Dabo is far from being out of the woods, Shane Beamer is underachieving higher. 3 straight SEC losses now, the latest allowing Kentucky to rally at home. I think it's time for Dabo, Beamer and Sellars to all hang it up.

High school football is also heating up as every team is now in region play. Gaffney is in probably their most favorite region slate in decades. Blacksburg's is favorable for the size but not the travel. Gaffney will need to avoid letdowns so they can play at home in the playoffs as much as possible.  Blacksburg will need to keep up the momentum going into the finale against Fairfield Central. Clover v Lake Wylie is this week. It's one of the games I want to see real bad. It's also my 30th year high school reunion (can't miss that).

Christina Pike is a WTHeck story.  She beats lethal injection twice and is now on a ventilator.  If she does get off the vent, does the death penalty debate go on further? In Pike's case she dehydrated herself, turned down her last meal. Medical professionals are saying that thickened her veins allowing the poison to not infect her.

Lindsay Clancy is turning out to be a trial of the century. I'm here for this as it appears the husband definitely did it, is already remarried with a child on the way. Notice when I talk about about how crooked the justice system is I do go beyond race. I place extra emphasis when it's a racial matter. In this case, Clancy's husband has a much superior lawyer.

Fair season is here, I've been to the Cleveland County Fair and it's still the best fair around. Only debate is do you go at day or night? For me the fair is always best at night although during the day on a weekday you don't see many people. I'm just glad I'm keeping this tradition going for myself.

The MLB playoffs roll on as the Atlanta Braves are still in it. I want them to beat the Dodgers so bad. We owned them in the regular season but Shotani wasn't at his best. Now our bullpen is thin.

Ok Parkin Latte in Blacksburg had a promotion in partnership with El Vacquerito across the street between 9am-11am to give away free coffee.  Mind you, Parkin Latte's slowest time have been after 9am and there have been talks from ownership on pulling the plug on the Blacksburg location and focusing on Clover. National Coffee Day is another indicator. Parkin had 215 customers between 9-11am. I think one of the staff said they do good to get 40 in that normal time frame.  It's definitely not the hours in Blacksburg, it's a failure to show support. I promise you if/when businesses like Parkin Latte go due to this, the locals will not hear the end of it from me.

Until next week!

The Deck at 260 Volume 50: 25 Years post 9/11

It's hard to believe we've been on the deck 50 times talking about various topics. 25 years since 9/11 is a lot. I'm starting to realize that many young adults weren't even born yet.

DaBaby restaurant (No Knife),  new shows, RareUSA growth, Why Did I Get Married Again, Another 7Brew

Charlotte folks and surrounding are not only crowding DaBaby's new restaurant No Knife, they are criticizing the prices. First of all, it's Charlotte and a celebrity. It's not going to be hole in the wall, grease stain prices. 2nd, it's clear many of you don't go out to breakfast/brunch near as much as unk and I do. I've seen cheaper but in this market this is average. Everything is expensive especially when you're getting $10 coffees daily. Some of you don't know how to save, cook, etc and it's showing.

The new Fall shows are here and coming. It's a far cry from when the new Fall lineups were the thing post Labor Day. I personally prefer seeing the new shows premiere in the Fall and the favorites/popular shows in the Spring when there's less interruption due to sweeps. I am definitely interested in The Drop-Off since I'm a Snowfall fan. Football is back of course and I always coordinate my TV show watches around Thursday-Sundays.

The growth in Blacksburg continues with RareUSA coming soon and at least 500 jobs expected. This is big especially if you're a commuter like myself. I don't plan on leaving Amazon at the moment but for those that have 30 minute and greater commutes this is huge. It's also big for the small businesses. They can get greater support with more residents working locally. It seems the older generation is pushing back as always. They need to realize that if the town doesn't grow soon it will quickly turn into Hickory Grove or Sharon. Granted we don't want to be Lake Wylie, Rock Hill or Fort Mill but we want to be in between also. Gaffney and Clover are facing similar.  The mills are long gone, we need something locally.

One thing we don't need is another 7Brew. Dang these are coming everywhere and as a coffee fiend I don't see the hype.  They apparently have a special every 7th of the month. They are definitely coming for Starbucks bit by bit. I won't lie I thought it would be Scooters or Dutch Bros. 7Brew appears to have more versatility.  Some complain of the prices at No Knife but aren't going to miss out on 7Brew.

I actually enjoyed Why Did I Get Married Again. Tarajii's presence in Janet's absence was huge, Mike is that friend you love from a distance, keeping in secrets and toxicity for so long is rarely healthy, mid life crisis is real and there were clear storyline holes.  I'm glad they pulled it off although I wouldn't have minded had it waited until Thanksgiving to release.

It may be officially Fall for episode 51!

The Deck at 260 Volume 49 (Ber Months are here)

Flock cameras, Death of a Pastors Wife, college players returning, Lindsay Clancy, Clover demographics changing, Dabo, Michigan last night

I honestly didn't realize these were a thing until my uncle was mentioning them. I don't see them as bad unless taxes go up to fund them. We have so many methods of tracking a person's location and honestly there is a lot of damage someone can do with a license plate number. Therefore if you're one of the ones freaking out over them trust there are bigger fish to be fried.

This miniseries continues to have people thinking and talking. Pastor JP Scott is very much that dark manipulator that uses the pulpit to justify his lust, sex addiction and sinful nature. He is a joke and I pray for anyone that still listens and believes him.  I would definitely watch out if I am Suzie his current wife. God has not visibly changed this man and he will only damage her and others.

I think it's despicable that college football players can try out for NFL teams, get cut and still return to college football. Where is the clause/agreement that ends your college career? Lane Kifflin already gets enough of the wrong attention at times. He can begin his career at LSU on the right foot after not fostering these two former players and not even playing them at all. The education part is an admissions deal which is a different pickle altogether.

Ok the Lindsay Clancy deal has really grown legs. Why is no one closely examining the husband here? I've been said the legal system as a whole is flawed and often useless. Unless there is evidence that Lindsay did unalive her children I am glad she walks free (no racial debate today although we already know how the other shoe deal works). Someone needs to be held accountable though. The lack of accountability with this case and with Mica Miller's and countless others is what gets me.

Clover and Lake Wylie are now not only two separate towns and communities they are now two separate high schools. That was never more evident Friday night at Clover's home opener. Clover has more diversity in nearly every way: fans, student body, cheerleaders, football team, etc. Basically you don't have the more affluent white players and fans anymore since they're all at Lake Wylie High now. I'm not saying this is good or bad, it's just noticeable. Clover is a small town similar to a Blacksburg, York, Chesnee, Kings Mountain, etc. There just seems to be a more involved community that doesn't include just white people.  I do know the Black community has been strong and proud for decades (many of those being my relatives). It will be very interesting long term as athletes will have the option to transfer to Lake Wylie High and vice versa for their athletes.

Dabo Swinney has reached the end, period. He has failed to adapt to the current landscape of college football. Yes we all know LSU is a great program especially at home on a Saturday night.  However this has been coming for about 4 years now. I don't think he makes it to October let alone the South Carolina game with another beat down like that. Looking at the schedule, there are at least two other teams that on paper could administer the same type of blowout and in Clemson.

Finally I'm unsure what voodoo Michigan has at the Big House.  Was it paid off? Did someone legitimately make a mistake? Were they trying to prevent another App State upset? Either way I want someone with good sense to convince me how they were able to put 1 more second on the game clock, run another play and win? Michigan can't win them all doing that.

Bring on Fall!

The Deck at 260 Volume 48

Whew doggies what a day/week/month on the deck! Is it really almost September/end of summer?

TX Roadhouse, Hayden, Labor Day weekend, Clover v Lake Wylie, college football , Dalton and Saco, Dolly Parton, other deaths, Penn State

Ok this Texas Roadhouse deal has been getting overblown. I haven't seen a single report of it's a collective deal or exactly which restaurants are doing this to Black people's fold. You all know by know I stand strongly for the cause. However those that haven't worked in a restaurant nor been in a restaurant kitchen don't realize how nasty that food truly is. I detached from Roadhouse a while ago (those rolls are still some of the best though!) and have went to Longhorn. More locations, less crowded, better steaks (that Tomahawk) and a more versatile menu.

We're in another run of celebrity deaths. It started with Hayden Panteriee and it's gone to Eddie Kane, Dolly Parton, the voice of Optimus Prime, the drummer from ZZ Top and even Tim Curry. Dolly is definitely the most notable. Dolly really stood for the cause and supported ALL human beings! You better believe when I get back to my race relations activism Aunt Dolly will be referenced. No negative comments will be tolerated!

It always feels weird when the first Monday in September is on the 2nd week of the month. Labor Day weekend is still a month out. I'm preparing the best I can as I will have a more odd weekend than usual.

The Clover School District has two high schools for the first time in history: Clover and Lake Wylie. They are sharing a stadium in the interim and are now arguing about how the colors on the field should be. It should be equal on the field and even highlighted with Lake Wylie flags during their home games. There's no mistaking that this is Clover's stadium, has been for years. You can represent the new school without taking the traditions from the current one! I wish I could attend the inaugural game but I have my 30 year high school reunion that weekend!

College football is slowly kicking off and now you have players that tried to walk on to an NFL team or went undrafted, were released and reenrolling in college due to a transfer portal loophole. This definitely needs to be addressed as there are obvious violations. I knew there would be mass issues if the transfer portal wasn't clear enough.

Who else is sick of Dalton and Sako? I'm good with influencers. Many have become like reality TV stars and it's getting sickening.

Speaking of race relations, the Penn State scandal is wild. We all know that if this was at an HBCU the sanctions and scrutiny would be worse. People really need to learn and practice confirmation bias and realize the playing field is not level.

Finally Dolly Parton was a national treasure. Her death hits the hardest for many. I do also appreciate the jokes with "boobs at half mast". We all need to strive to be more like Dolly.

See you in September!

The Deck at 260 Volume 47

School's almost back in session, football is backb more rain and hot weather but we don't stop at The Deck. It's just damp is all.

Zakarys/Boston Annies/small businesses
June Fair murder
Shealys BBQ review and better spots
Gnat removal
WU in more trouble?

I do hate to see small businesses suffer. Summer is already the toughest due to folks being out of town for vacation. Boston Annie's has went from rough kitchen repairs that the city of Gaffney doesn't support. She went from trying to raise money to get a food truck to getting ready to go home to Boston. She and her awesome food will be missed (I never got to take unk there, I'm sure he would have loved the stews). Zakary's coffee shop is going through similar. Low support, Duke Power (how are they still around?) not responding to maintenance requests but charging them as much as they do the nearby multimillion dollar hospital for utilities. I don't frequent Zakarys: however I do realize them and Boston Annie's were not only hallmarks of downtown Gaffney for a period, they were fueled by the Limestone College community.  This is another ripple effect of Limestone College closing. I do pray for Annie in her next journey back home and that Zakarys can find a way to turn it around.

This murder of young June Fair in Gaffney has hit me and the community really hard and close (nevermind he's a distant cousin of mine and I've come to know his mom and those over the years). First is of course the gun violence deal. 2nd is that kids do not fight anymore. What Pops from Friday said is becoming more and more true. 3. Some people around the county and state are so evil, racist and sad. Either way, a young man is gone, two more are headed to prison. I do love the action being taken in the moment to take care of both the funeral expenses and his unborn son. I also like that community members aren't giving up on resources and support to mitigate this violence from continuing. We have to start somewhere.

I have heard for weeks (especially after I had Marilyn Martin on the podcast) about Shealys BBQ. I wanted to go the week I was off and try them but it was right after the 4th of July and they always close for two weeks afterwards. I decided to try them this past Thursday, made the trip through secondary roads and the Midlands region of South Carolina.  I did like a lot of the esthetic: a sink and towel to wash your hands upon entry, affordable buffet, ample parking and communal big tables. They had a nice salad bar, soft serve ice cream and dessert bar. However their regular food was underwhelming. Most of the stuff was cafeteria style, not homemade tasting nor smelling. That had to be the worse looking and tasting mac n cheese I've had. The hash looked runny and gross. The BBQ (all 3 kinds) did not taste smoked and had too much vinegar. It was like Wades: overhyped due to reputation and location. I do not like when places like this (Harolds, Beacon, etc) do not live up to the hype.  The chicken was good and the staff was kind and courteous though. I know many other BBQ/country cooking places I would recommend before Shealys. It is my opinion but I also feel like I know what good should look and taste like.

I've dealt with many issues in this 33 year old home, currently on the end of my home improvement upgrades. The current challenge is getting rid of these gnats. I have cleaned house (will do more tonight), followed recommendations online. They appear to be coming from my bathroom, likely from all of these storms. I also have a toilet in the other bathroom that will not flush. Ahh the challenges of home ownership and with an older home.

It appears at Winthrop University (the WU) there is financial difficulties. These are to the tune of $100,000 from normal projected donations.  Many minority alums are not happy about what's been happening and are refusing to donate (myself included). It's truly sad, I love my school and my time there. However the board needs to get this together and show us minorities they care and they do stand for diversity.

Until next time.

The Deck Volume 46 (The I Plead the 5th Edition)

Alright now, it's feeling cool on the Deck for the 2nd straight end of July/firdt of August!  The deck and life feels better with Fall and football just around the corner.

Fauci, Odyssey, bonnets, All Star weekend recaps, back to school giveaways parasite

Ok by now most know about Dr. Fauci pleading the 5th during the COVID/CDC hearings. Even those that took the vaccine/followed COVID protocols knew Fauci was full of it, likely was behind creating it and an opportunist. I don't know many that dispute that. What is also disputed (I'm so over talking about it) is the way the USA handled the COVID pandemic. Dr. Fauci was again an opportunist. We all should always do our due diligence. Trust but verify.

The Odyssey as well as the newest Spiderman are currently the biggest in the theaters right now. Everytime I get ready to drop Regal Unlimited a new string of good movies comes out. Now far as historical accuracy (specifically involving race), we were not there. We do not know whom looked like who. We can ascertain based on the area and ancestors but we cannot say that everyone was white. It goes back to Cleopatra, Napoleon, Beetoven, even Jesus Christ.

The bonnet/durag debate at HBCUs has definitely heated up the socials lately.  I'm going to say this as a former college student and a current manager that's enforcing dress codes. Dress for the occasion, use common sense and good judgment to know when it's appropriate to cover your heads, put on a decent T-shirt and show some class. I dressed down much of my college experience in the classroom and residence halls. You better believe I dressed differently when I went to administrative offices, meetings and especially the Cafe at 615pm (if you went to the WU in the 90s you know!). I'm currently in the middle of a fashion makeover and if these are things you don't know naturally know then the rules must be stricter. I'm a heterosexual man and honestly I get sick of seeing young women with booty shorts and basically their bras. There is a time and place for everything.

All-Star weekend in Gaffney was again a success.  It doesn't seem like the crowds came like they have in the past. You all know I can be critical of events and event planners. However I don't think this was all on them. It's the crowds as well. These guys and the community have been very consistent, successful and I'm confident adjustments and improvements will continue to be made. One thing would be to lower the amount of games, announce the dates further in advance and possibly even do a 2 day game pass instead of so much for each day. People genuinely want to see the games but with back to school so early this year there is a choice to be made.

Speaking of back to school, it is so early this year! I'm not used to this. I have to adjust my commutes and traffic patterns. Also I didn't really prepare properly to give to back to school drives also due to a busy July (my birthday month plus busy stuff at work).  I'll continue to post on this throughout the month but it is taking summer away from the children and staff members.  Unless they're getting multiple days off like years past.

It appears the food parasite is starting to pass us by. It hit ginger ale, lettuce and then bacon. Most I know that got sick (myself included) appear to be recovering.  We should always take heed in which foods we trust.

The Deck Volume 45

Back on the Deck as we are finally getting sustained rainfall in the dog day's of summer!

-Food recalls/explosive diarrhea
- Quiet on the creek
-Bron to Phil
-Term limits
- All-Star weekend in Gaffney

We have food recalls often and this is the first time in years I can honestly recollect a spell of explosive diarrhea. If you're Gen X and above, that's honestly not the worse thing (IYKYK) unless you're not near a toilet or if you have food poisoning. I may have to go exclusively to Red Rock ginger ale or even to Vernors for a while due to some ginger ale brands being affected though.

I am angered at this "quiet on the creek" meaning. Being from the country, I thought it referred to fishing. Some of you know my mind can be nasty but innocent on certain accounts. Now this is disturbing. I am curious to know what the LGBT community thinks of this.

Welp LeBron has made his 40th decision. I guessed Philly because he goes back some long years with one of the executives. You're about to see a different brand of Philly fans. I will also say I'm glad Bron didn't do this on my birthday/birthday week for once.

Lindsay Graham has passed, Mitch McConnell is on his death bed. Now people are having the discussion about term limits again. I think it all depends on health and mental competence as well. No more than 4 terms should be it in my thoughts. I keep wondering who is voting for these folks?

I'm still gathering feedback from All-Star weekend in Gaffney. It was a vibe but diluted from years past. Could it be due to some of the players that played/didn't play? Sickness (parasite) and the storms? We will circle back later. 2 years ago I was on time and couldn't find a good parking space. This year I was late both days and still plenty of parking. Now York and Lancaster counties may partake.

Almost the end of July!

The Deck Part 44 (4th of July/Birthday edition)

Good to be back on the deck between the 4th of July and my 48th birthday having my morning coffee and mantras. Here's what we're talking about.

4th of July overall recap
Hash quality
Wedding guests
USA v Belgium World Cup
Braves slump
YMCA?
Famous track star connection
Know your friends
Big Tigger

I will likely go back on the deck before returning to work next Monday but we will start here.

Ok despite the usual 4th of July controversy and the milestone being the 250th anniversary of our country it was still a great weekend. Listen if anyone paid attention in history class we all know Blacks were still in slavery 250 years ago. We do know that Blacks were not considered equal at the time the Declaration of Independence was signed. I nor anyone else should excuse this. However, people of all cultures still celebrated. Whether be independence, family, or simply a weekend of good food, family, cooking out, fireworks. etc, who says you can't celebrate? You are in America, this is 2026, celebrate whatever you like (even if it's Juneteenth the remix, Juneteenth 2.0, 704 day, my birthday, family reunions). Staying inside and doing nothing nets you nothing, period.

I'm seeing more and more folk in South Carolina make and sell hash. For my next batch, I've decided to add two more ingredients, one you will immediately recognize. I think this is awesome given just 30 years ago where if you didn't make it out by 9am to your favorite hash place you were out of luck. Now hash (beef/pork, etc) is a South Carolina delicacy that's mostly enjoyed on the 4th of July and now even year round. Basically it should have at least beef, butter, onions, salt, pepper and some potatoes. I currently make mine without potatoes and it gives a different taste and texture.

I like the debate about wedding guests. I always think it should start with close family and friends. One married couple is only inviting those that know them both. I see nothing wrong. Weddings are uber expensive and some people aren't coming for your best interest. They are coming to see and be seen. The plus one deal is another topic. I'm ok with a miscellaneous plus one. I like what my accounting guy from the WU said a while back about RSVPs, gifts, etc. Either way, invite whom you want (including no children), keep it under budget and remember whose day it actually is.

The USA's FIFA World Cup run ended with a loss to Belgium. I do love how our country has come together over the past few weeks and how soccer is becoming more of a norm in youth sports. One day, one day!

The Atlanta Braves are in a downspiral after not losing a series from April-June. Going into All-Star break we need to see if we should keep Acuna Jr or not given his injuries. It's also time to go after another big star, a leader. We need that presence at the moment.

Man listen the YMCA is where it's at! I'm glad I can finally enjoy along with keeping my current gym membership active. It's a modified all access pass, great facilities, staff and also a pool to go to from sun up to sundown.  Sun tans and better diving here I come!

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden put the track world on notice by beating ShaCarri Richardson in a recent 100 meter face off. ShaCarri of course is well known, Melissa is mostly known around our area as she's from Coastal Carolina. Best part, my friend/current gym manager was her former coach. I'm over the moon for them both!

In the wake of all of these mysterious murders and going back to Kenneka Jenkins and those, KNOW YOUR FRIENDS! I'm friendly with lots of folks but I trust few. Especially without my phone, where I am outnumbered in minority, and near clear danger. I'm not making this a racial thing (yet). Everything does add up. We as adults and parents have to be viligant regarding whom our children associate with. I can see now why my mom was so protective. She was ahead of her time and knew what could go wrong. We have to see discrepancies and red flags before it's too late!

Ok with the Big Tigger drama. There's no telling how long this was going on and let's be real, this was more than about that phone. Always look within.

The Deck Part 43 (Independence and Freedom)

We sit here on the deck after a much needed 5 days off from work before Prime Week. I took a small social media break also. Let's dive in and not just the pool.

7on7, Braves, Knicks, racism, next 36 days, Spud, pools in bigger cities

I get so tired of not only white privilege but the blatant racism. My people and DEFINITELY myself have educated you all on systemic racism and our struggle for 6 years now. At this point if you know me and still fail to see this, it's a choice. Again I'm tired and the justice system is far too unfair on Black folks. The evidence and metrics are there. Reading is fundamental and all one has to do is read to listen and understand, not read to react. I do not pretend to fully understand another culture or females. Please don't act like you understand my lifetime struggle or think I'm not seen as a Black man in society.  I am biracial, I know exactly who I am. I have to move accordingly and advocate for the Black experience though.

7 on 7 tournaments in high school football have really heated up over the past decade. Speaking of things, concepts I cannot understand is this. Maybe because I'm old sure and a purist of football. I realize the game has changed in rules, speed and conditioning development due to full adoption of the spread offense and compensating for lack of hitting and tackling drills. I'm good with 7on7 tournaments, weight lifting meets, lineman camps and the like. What I'm not good with are fans/parents treating them like they're games. They are not, sorry. They are glorified, extended spring practices/mini camps. I do love getting the teams together and building that camaraderie, seeing other schools, etc. But competition, winning trophies? Nah man you just won a backyard two hand touch football game. You didn't win an actual football game and let's not forget what the actual sport in real time stands for.

I am soo happy, proud and elated that my New York Knicks FINALLY broke the 53 year championship drought and are NBA world champions. I don't care how they did, if the NBA is rigged or not. The universe came together for long time Knicks fans like myself. Last Saturday hanging with friends all day and watching the Knicks close out that championship was one of the best days of 2026 thus far.

On that note, all the small dogs on 260/270 are now gone in under a two month span. First Roxy, then Bud and now Spud. Those dogs really gave me comfort and emotional support when I needed it. Although one of my best friends has a Jack Russell terrier, I didn't realize how much I liked them until now. I still thankfully have my cat Mosey. It goes back to a saying I heard years ago about us as humans being a dog's entire life.

People talk and get outraged about all of of the annexing, small town growth and such. My question is why don't these cities have more local pools? I'm a country boy and I'm a huge fan of creeks, rivers and swimming holes. Sometimes when I'm out, I would like a good public swimming facility to go to. I have friends and families with pools (and even a neighbor). However they work full time during the day, have lives. The Y is pricey but I may have to go that route for my water therapy.

Ok now we are what I call the 36 days of independence and freedom: the stretch between my dad's birthday (June 17) and my mom's birthday (July 21). In between are Juneteenth, Father's Day, the 4th of July and my birthday on 7/11. Many are choosing to celebrate one but not the other. To me, that's fine.  America turns 250 years old this year and I live in walking distance of the very grounds the Revolutionary War was won on. Many Blacks take issue with that. I have a podcast episode already about that. In short, you don't have Juneteenth if America isn't free from Great Britain. It took far too long for Blacks to be free from slavery, that's a fact. It's still okay to celebrate being in America and love your culture.  Good grief Charlie Brown!

Ok I may not be back onto the deck until after the 4th of July ironically. Please enjoy celebrating independence, freedom or whatever else these next two weeks. That's your choice and the purpose of having frredom.

The Deck Part 42 the ✊🏾Cookout!

Back from Washington, DC, back on the deck for ya guy. This is not talking about cookouts but it is cookout season. At black cookouts, the conversations can get serious. This will be one of those deck roundtables

More racism/system imbalance
Racial boycotting
Small town growth issues

I needed to get away for a few days and I'm grateful my company did that for me. Between the young lady in Shelby and of course young Cyrus getting shot and his Asian murderer getting away with him, I am emotionally drained. It's always tough to be a person of color in this country. It's even more tough and traumatic seeing stuff like this continue to happen. That's why we as a people must continue to vote, run for these offices, have our REAL IDs (trust me on this one), have meetups and roundtables with your elected officials. This especially holds true at the local level. It's not always about Republican and Democrat either. We need folks in office that are going to stand for equality and not nonsense. I'm just tired man, so tired.

Now of course we have come with boycotting. This is now boycotting Asian services (nail salons, restaurants, etc). Ok whoa, whoa, WHOA!!! Now if this was similar to the NFL or the recent DCEU boycott then yeah that's different. We cannot cancel ALL Asians for the behavior of one. I'm all about uplifting the Black community but canceling an entire culture for the behavior of one? Nah I'll sit that one out. What I won't sit out our boycotts period. Someone told me the DC boycott is a trap door and that boycotts are rarely effective. Since when? Let's go back to nearly a year ago when Cracker Barrell tried to change their logo. See how quickly that was halted. Other boycotts that have proved effective are Papa John's, DirecTV, and currently Target. Google is free, AI is so reliable. It's hard to make you feel welcome to the cookout when not only do you make statements like this, you can't back them up.

I'll save some iPhone nonsense I saw for another day. Meanwhile,...

Data centers and even a 1.2B dollar company that's coming to Blacksburg and Cherokee County is causing problems. Up to 400 new jobs will be created but much of the old guard is mad. Now I've watched this happen in Rock Hill and Fort Mill. All growth isn't good growth and I'm very skeptical of data centers. However, when resources and jobs are created, it benefits even a small town. Residents are more likely to pour back into the town when they have reason to and don't have to drive to the next largest city.  I remember just in the 80s we didn't have to go to Spartanburg, Gastonia or Rock Hill often, not even for work. The textile mills provided stable employment and more small businesses were around. How many would rather live near their jobs while paying lower taxes and have more businesses closeby? Don't thikn too hard now.

Ok this is an action packed month and I nearly forgot it's also Men's Mental Health Month and Black Music Month

The Deck at 260 Volume 41

Happy Memorial Day weekend on the Deck. Earlier this week it felt like July. Right now it feels like October with the rain and cooling off.

Speaking of folks and things that need cooling off,

3 albums Drake?
NBA playoffs so far
Prom v formals
Graduations or promotion ceremonies

Drake not only released "Iceman" last Friday he released 2 other albums. This was after the much hyped beef with Kendrick Lamar in which Drake filed a lawsuit. I'm not a Drake fan, don't care for much of his music personally. This is good for the current generation of hip hop fans and summertime. He's already ruffling feathers including with adult entertainment star Cherokee D'Ass.

Honestly even with my Knicks in the fold the NBA playoffs have been meh thus far. Boston, LA, Dallas, Golden State and Denver are all eliminated along with Minnesota and Ant-Man. It's truly a transition that I don't think many were ready for. Wemby and Brunson are rising as expected. This is truly a different generation of NBA stars.

Ok I feel like we have to do this every year. A prom is different from a formal or a ball. I'm very happy for Mook and Meek that they went to their head start and 5th grade dances. They are NOT proms so let's ensure we have defined this clearly.  Prom is in high school. Just like graduations.

Congratulations to all of the high school graduates! I'm good with honoring kindergarten graduates and every age below that. However, after a while these are PROMOTION ceremonies, not graduations. It just bugs the Heck out of me. Certain people tell me it's because I don't have kids and perhaps that's the case. I'm also neodivergent so certain small things bother me more than others. It's one of the reasons I have this outlet.

Cheers to the unofficial beginning of summer! (yes I know summer isn't until June 21, I'm actually ok with calling this the beginning of summer)

The Deck at 260 Volume 40

Maan can't believe we've been on the Deck for 40 sessions. It's mid May and it's chilly. Had some rain so now I can have a good bonfire tonight. Here's our lineup

Michael movie reception/talk
100 years of Blacksburg High School (SC)
Hantavirus and cruises
Mother's Day recap
Shootings and being outside
AI is here like it or not
VOTE please!

You all know I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan. It's MJ 24/7/365 over here at 260, always has and will be. The Michael movie got all MJ fans (diehard, fair weather, bandwagon, etc) talking. Biggest things I've seen are the women MJ slept with and how their father really controlled them. Now although Michael claimed to be a virgin until 35 and was likely neodivergent, I'm sure if he didn't sleep with many of his close female friends (i.e., Diana Ross, Brooke Shields), there was other stuff happening.  Mike loved Diana, big facts. He included her in his will. It's been documented many times the control and abuse Joseph Jackson had on those boys late into adulthood. Now I'm seeing all of the LaVar Ball, Williams dad, etc comparisons. Yes many black parents back then (and even now) administered BTA whoopings. I believe in corporal punishment but ABUSE is abuse and control and manipulation is real.  Joseph did all of that to those boys and Michael may have gotten it the worst. That said, I'm ready for part 2 when it really goes beyond the music and dancing.

I love food trucks and food truck festivals! There's literally been 4 in 2 days within close driving distance of me. I only did one and stayed disciplined. I try to support my folks the best I can even when I can't/don't attend. Best believe if you have a food truck, I likely know where you set up at on the regular.  I found that BBQ truck and maan I don't regret it. I only regret not finding it sooner.

The hantavirus is the latest epidemic and guess what, it's occurring in an election year. I haven't heard of it and it's apparently administered by rats. Now my cat Mosey kills rats every night here. I've seen and been around these rodents my entire life. NYC and other areas are infested with them. What makes that one cruise ship so different? Also y'all when are we going to stop being scared of cruises due to isolated incidents. There are many that are frequent fliers, skydive, bungee jump, ride ATVs and motorcycles, swim, etc. But you won't take a cruise? There is something else going on and not just isolated incidents. Please don't deviled egg this up and mess up another person's good time.

Ok we will talk about AI. It's everywhere, those ChatGPT flyers are getting old, many workplaces (like mine) are adopting it full time. For those that are skeptical and hate change, AI is here to stay and it's the current technology wave. There will be ups and downs but it's best that you learn it, adapt it to your lifestyle, and even use it to help you earn money. Gas is currently on the high end, you may as well benefit.

Mother's Day has come and gone. It's harder for me obviously. However I don't think anyone argues about it being overcommercialized nor anything else. Only thing is you know you better plan accordingly if you're going out to eat that day or even shop. Even at the JOB with a limited engagement budget, I knew I couldn't fumble the recognition of our awesome mother figures.

It's the time where people are out more and don't know how to have a good time without shooting. South Carolina is now open carry without CWP so it's more hayware. I'll just say protect yourself accordingly, don't cause nor take any mess and really be careful where you go.

Last but not least, VOTE! This shouldn't be a question with all the redistricting of voters and areas. If you do/do not want a person in office, we must collectively find ways to get them in or out. This is not exclusive to party affiliation either. Stand on your vote/decision/candidates.

Dang next weekend is Memorial Day weekend!

The Deck at 260 Volume 39

This is one of those weeks out on the Deck where the conversation, discussion, is more natural and free flowing.

Meg and Klay
SC State and all that's developing
Various student protests
Finally rain!
Annexing update
Iron City BBQ has breakfast!

Okay I need to go back months ago and see what I said about Megan the Stallion and Klay Thompson lasting. First let's be real. Regardless of what happened, Klay was wrong. Regardless of your race(s), you cannot cheat on your mate. When you're a POC it's magnified. Second Meg is heartbroken like any of us would be. She's human at the end of the day. It is a coincidence that she is dropping music around this same time but this does seem genuine. People please stop bashing either one of them. They are humans at the end of the day. Humans outgrow each other, have character flaws, and vent. Y'all are way too invested into folks lives you may never meet.

Last week it was Winthrop (da WU) getting all the bad publicity. Now it's also Coastal Carolina and more notably SC State. I'm loving these student protests! I witnessed Winthrop's in real time and maan it was beautiful and I'm so proud. They aren't standing for this BS and nonsense. It makes me more hopeful for the next generation.

This SC State horsecrap (much like the annexing) continues to develop. So much to unpack here but in short it's manipulation, money driven and racism all in one. Why did the board think it was a good idea to invite this type of person to speak at graduation? Let's for ONCE put aside politics or even race. Certain things do not go together and the Lt Governor of South Carolina whom is against DEI speaking at an HBCU makes no sense. Second, you have board members at the state house voting to try and defund SC State. I tell you, I already work in North Carolina but I have my roots in South Carolina. It makes me want to move, this is so embarrassing.

Rain is finally falling in this complex area! Those that know me know I'm not a fan of heavy sustained rainfalls. I do realize the necessity though. My grass was crunching too much and the pollen was upsetting my allergies too much. I can't remember which summer it was but it was becoming like that. It was so dry I probably had to cut grass 6 times the entire period. Balance is necessary.

The annexing saga continues. Now the Cherokee County Council is meeting in the AM hours to attempt to block the annexing. I don't know all the logistics here but I am learning. I do know I am locked in and this will be a Quentin Tarantino style ending that makes no sense and no one is really happy.  I do like how the Grassy Pond community is pushing back though.

Iron City BBQ (whom we're attempting to get on the return of the #imjustdrew podcast) is NOW serving breakfast! My uncle and I both love small breakfast spots and this is another good thing for the town of Blacksburg. Waffle House still fits in well as we all know it's not about just breakfast with the Awful Waffle.

Stay tuned for the next updates in this saga!

The Deck at 260 Volume 38

April is ending and I can't even hang on my Deck without a mask due to this thickening pollen. I've had to wear a mask the past two days and will likely have to due to lack of rain.

WU, new license plate, pollen thickening, MJ movie , Kendrick v Drake 2?

This pollen is out of hand, driest April I can remember.  We need a good week of rain. Not just for the farms and plans, to end the burn ban, etc. These allergies are legit killing folks. I won't lie I can't hardly stand it. I pray for those that have to work outside because I cannot. I love the outdoors also.

Racism is showing out almost as bad as the pollen. First we have the controversial Revolutionary War license plate for the state of South Carolina. It's commemorating the 250th birthday of our country. Now while not completely historically accurate nor blatantly racist, it's triggering. The images of those soldiers represents a time for black people where our ancestors did fight in the war but were not free. We were servants, in the cotton fields, etc. Our freedom would come decades later (largely because of winning the Revolutionary War). That said, I have no issue with the license plate but I understand the oppression.

Now this nonsense going on at Winthrop University (the WU) I take great issue to. If you're not already aware, please follow @projectcato on Instagram for more. To sum it up, these comments/slursmade by board members and high ranking officials have been a long time coming. If you went to the WU when I did, it was evident that certain people in power were uncomfortable with the Black community, our organizations, values, styles etc. I've watched it all close up and afar. Removing the benches in front of Richardson and Wofford Halls. Restructuring the parking lot so that loud, vehicles couldn't park in front but still parked in the giant X in front. When the campus was remodeled, it was done in a fashion so that people/Rock Hillians couldn't cruise around during the day with ease (I wasn't very upset with that one.). Letting organizations such as SGA, AOE, and even some NPHC organizations go under. The manner in which WU Homecoming tailgating has been treated for so long once more and more Black people started coming and staying for a long time like a tailgate should be. Changing the official logo of the university from the Tillman Hall clock and allowing the WU Black Alumni to have a huge, successful 2025 celebration (still wondering why nothing happened in 2026). Now we have this mess. I'm over it now, I want answers, I want the folks that FINALLY decided to show their behinds to be held accountable. This is not a good look for the university I hold near and dear to my heart. They do not stand on what they're supposed to. Until further notice, I'll continue to support certain university events, games, Homecoming of course, alumni mixers. But no #drewfromdawu and I'm not giving the University any extra monies nor donations. I encourage ALL Winthrop alums to join me in this until this is made right!

Ok now that I got that off of my chest, I will say the new Michael Jackson movie did not disappoint at all. Great performances, acting and choreography. It really focused on Michael in the early years until the late 80s when he FINALLY broke away from the controlling, abusive father Joseph Jackson. I am so awaiting how they are going to frame the 2nd part.

The Internet debunked the rumors but will Kendrick Lamar actually release a "Fireman" type album to combat Drake's "Iceman"? I'm here for it if K.Dot does. It's been two years since Kendrick won that beef and I think it would boost both of their streams, sales and tour proceeds.

Until next time

The Deck at 260 Volume 37

Welcome back to another edition back on the deck where it's warm, too warm. The burn ban is still in effect and lots of things are lighting up otherwise. I'm not Levor Ross or any other politics based guy so you better go on his forum for that.

Annexing/building up the city of Gaffney
Mother's Day baskets already?
Younger people (Gen Z, YNs) potentially going to war?

Ok the only thing hotter than the Southern weather right now is the annexing war in Gaffney right now. The three council members, including Mayor Lyman Dawkins, are under fire for voting to annex city limits out to Hwy 11. This area is mostly farmland (the Grassy Pond community) with some notable areas such as Love Field and very little commerce. Approximately 150 homes would be built out there, including a fire station and add to the development near the outlet (Yellow) mall and the area that Spartanburg Community College has. The city is in a huge deficit tax wise since Limestone University closed last year and are trying multiple things to close this gaps.

Here are my points of order and what I think will happen (I have allies on both sides so I'm merely playing devil's advocate). Gaffney will ultimately get what they want and at least some of that area will be annexed. The council keeps pushing it so a deal must be in place someplace. Gaffney is in a good position to grow. I don't think everyone wants Gaffney to turn into Boiling Springs, Rock Hill and Fort Mill. More homes are needed for this growth. Obtaining the Limestone property and even the dilipated Hwy 29 areas are other goals. There will be lawsuits, pushback and not everyone will lose their properties that date back centuries. It will get ugly for a while, council members may resign or not be re elected. City of Gaffney, change has to come either way. I live outside of city limits myself and although I have sizable work commutes, it's worth it at the end of the day from that standpoint. However I have to drive to Rock Hill, Gastonia or Spartanburg for many things. That gets taxing (no pun intended). If you want a Target, Krispy Kreme, Publix, etc., some of this vacant land between Grassy Pond and Union Highway needs to be developed. I take it the Grassy Pond area is a prime target given it's proximity to the interstate. I say continue to fight it but come with empathy and a civil mind (council and Mayor also). Both need to explore all opportunities. I'm still salty as a pretzel that Blacksburg still doesn't have a Waffle House and no growth near the interstate. Both parties need to ensure this is profitable and reasonable for the long term and to fix the other crooked areas in the city.

Now although my mother has been gone in the physical for nearly 3 years now, I make it a mission to make mother's around me feel celebrated especially in the workplace. I'm currently trying with my engagement team to do it within budget and still make it glorious. I'm ok with making something like baskets or bags but I need the time and people. Balance, balance, balance!

Now that the US is fighting with at least two countries, there's talk of bringing the draft back. For those of you that don't know, it won't take much. At age 18, every person is required to register for selective service. The target audience are Gen Z (the YNs, main Tik Tok influencers, the BBL crew, etc). Laugh all you want but Druski, GloRilla, Sexy Redd, Morgan Wallen, even athletes such as Stefan Diggs, Deion Sanders's sons, LeBron James sons (well maybe not Bronny) could all go to fight. We have eligible national guard/current active duty soldiers so this may not be necessary. Just a thought though.

Enjoy the last of winter/first of summer!

The Deck at 260 Volume 36

Happy Easter/Final Four weekend! It's sizzling on the Deck and these are weekends I love.

Pooh Sheisty v Gucci Mane, Good Friday, Lent is Over, CB kissing married woman on stage, SC beating UCONN, Dawn v Geno

Gucci Mane was confronted by Pooh Sheisty and his crew over a record deal gone wrong. Many were calling Gucci out for not reacting differently. It's called adulting and not knowing every angle of the situation. Plus you have to move differently when a person openly calls himself Sheisty.

Speaking of reacting differently. the debate of the weekend was no doubt Geno v Dawn after the SC/UCONN women's game was over. Dawn reacted as she should have, like a lady. She has a region and culture of supporters that back her. Geno sadly does have a history of behaving this way especially towards female coaches. He has a huge inferiority complex that the late great Pat Summitt called out years back. It hasn't stopped UCONN's women program from countless wins, championships and high profile recruits. What we're witnessing now is the apex of Dawn's/SC dynasty run and the ending of UCONN's under Geno. Quite frankly after 54 straight wins he's highly salty about it.

Let's not let this tiff take away from what SC girls accomplished last night. Outmatched on paper. Losing 3 key players, including the controversial transfer of Lay Fulwiley and SC is back in the championship game. UCONN star Sarah Strong was so shook at the real-time matchups she ripped her jersey. Joyce Edwards is developing into a star before our very eyes and Raven Johnson is the leader we always knew. Now they have to finish the job on Easter Sunday against UCLA.

Good Friday is one of the most underrated holidays of the year. It's the start of one of the most sacred weekends in religious culture. I don't always get nor take off for Good Friday. It's quite a time even if folks don't always remember the reason.

Another reason for the above is Lent is over! If you're a non-Catholic like myself that practices it I will say Good Friday hits differently. It means while your sacrifice is small compared to the one Christ made, it's meaningful as well. I come out of Lent every year feeling accomplished. I encourage anyone of any faith to try it out.

Also Chris Brown can't stay out of the news long. With Cardi B shaking her booty on her way to our region soon, Breezy had a married woman on stage (didn't know) and she tongue kissed Chris. Now first of all, that doesn't speak well to the woman to be going around kissing anyone. Secondly, what type of marriage does she have? There are too many questions here and especially after watching the clip, I don't think this one is on C-Breezy.

Happy Easter all!

The Deck at 260 Volume 35

Whew this pollen out on the deck as well as hot topics!

Hubert Davis v Belichick, GLP, Lent, Easter, New Big Stuff, Shortcuts in life, Tank and Tyrese Versuz

UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis was fired this week after the Tarheels were bounced in the first round of the NCAA men's tournament. Now while Hubert's teams underachieved and this one imploded after losing their best player, there are some things to look at. One is that he didn't have a losing record. Two in football, legendary coach Bill Belichick stunk it up in his first season and got an extension. Racial or otherwise bias, I would say so. I would also say it shows that Black people even in 2026 cannot be average. Let's keep watching other coached like Kelvin Sampson and Marcus Freeman. I have to be careful also as a man of color. I'm held to a different standard also.

I didn't realize people were so passionate about GLP-1s or passionate against me or just passionate! Here's my simple take. I only implied I wasn't a fan of them (which I'm not). I do stand on the concept they are not a natural weight loss supplement. They are a medical supplement for sure. Hollywood and other famous people have used them as the latest diet fad.If your doctor prescribes any of these medications for T2 diabetes, take them. However know the risk, use with care, and don't forget about consistent diet, exercise, stress control and rest. I say the same about surgeries. They are a tool. Just like anything else I discuss on the deck, you do not have to disagree and can keep it moving. I don't agree with many things I don't discuss but you know what I do? Keep it moving. Those that know me best know that's growth for me as I'm almost 48.

Lent is almost over and Easter is almost here. I cannot believe in 2026 people are still debating Christians for observing Lent. Point being, it's healthy to debate and talk things over. I think people need to mind their own business. Second, I LOVE Easter! I'm not a fan of attending church if you only attend on Easter and/or Christmas. I've made peace with it though.

Winthrop University (the WU) has a new remastered athletic logo with the beloved mascot, Big Stuff. I've had a love/hate relationship for years with the current academic logo. This logo helps out a lot to balance an ambiguous logo. I do love the classic Eagle head though!

Tank and Tyrese had their Versuz last night. While Tyrese is talented, Tank is a little more talented and has a greater cataloged. I don't know many other songs from Tyrese other than "Sweet Lady". It wasn't completely one sided, I just want to see a Versuz similar to Cash Money and No Limit with more balance.

Finally I want to address shortcuts in life, which like it or not, that's what the majority of people use GLP-1 shots for. I won't go into full detail, I will just say I was accused of using shortcuts, cutting corners, etc. Far as your health, one should never do this. I did hire a trainer (and I may rehire her soon or another) so I stay fully on track. Do what is best for you but also do the right thing ethically. Please match your work ethic and body of work with what is actually happening. I've been a bigger advocate of this for abojt a year now. We live in a world of free will. Live how you wish but don't feel you have to fake nor lie about how you live. Be authentic and genuine!

Until next time,...

The Deck at 260 Vol 34.

We are back at a couple of wild weeks. The Deck is Spring ready and here we go!

Gaffney girls basketball, small v large venue, Bam 83, ex players charging, MBJ, March Madness, Click bait lists

Gaffney girls basketball did not win the ultimate prize. However they are set up for success for seasons to come and definitely the next couple of seasons. I love seeing this as a Cherokee County native and a fan of the game.

Speaking of champion teams, there were neutral venues for the UpperState Championships, some were high school gyms, others in college such as Wofford University. The college campuses offer plenty of room while high school gyms can be packed out and even turn away fans. I remember 30 years ago when Clover and JL Mann (both teams coached by legends Bennie Bennett and Mark Huff). The game was so packed the fire Marshall had to demand that other fans go to a room and watch on closed circuit television. Venues such as Wofford and even having the state championship back at Colonial Coliseum in Columbia will accommodate high school fan base. However the excitement and intensity of a packed house is lost.

Bam from the Miami Heat scored 83 points last week, surpassing Kobe Bryant as 2nd all time. Sports fans are stating that Bam's score was forced and not as real since the Heat was up by 20 and Bam's teammates were doing things such as missing foul shots just to give the ball back to Bam for3 easier shots. I think that a point is a point and the game has changed. I'm good with Bam getting 83 regardless.

This is the season for area football players that made it to college and the NBA to hold camps. Many of them do it for free or cheap. Spartanburg and NFL star Deebo Samuel got mad flack for charging local kids more than $300 for a 1-2 day camp and clinic. Apparently it was Deebo's people, not his. I've seen several athletes, including my own cousin, conduct camps on the regular without all of this drama. The point is you can't defend everything as a professional, you can only allow your consistent work in the community speak the necessary volumes. Many athletes do lose connection in this communities due to stuff like this and have to be careful and persistent.

Michael B. Jordan won the Best Actor Oscar for his dual role in "Sinners". MBJ has been grinding for two decades now and is simply that it actor right now. It's great of course for a Black actor/actress to win and also great for someone that's made such an impact in big roles and films. I love the praise he's been given and I can't wait for his next appearance.

March Madness is already off to a great start (more next week). High Point took down Nebraska and Siena fought Duke to the bitter end. Both of the men's and women's tournaments are simply must see TV and a tradition for me every end of March. I love watching the games either at home or out with friends. I'm not cool with paying outrageous prices to watch 1st and 2nd round games locally.

My circle and I discuss hip hop occasionally (another good topic for the Deck). I don't like click bait arguments anymore than politics nor apples v oranges debates. This list I saw on social media was ridiculous. I like how it allows for the debate to begin. The responses were like saying questionable responses like Greg Oden was the best NBA player or that deviled eggs is the best Thanksgiving dish. I won't start nor post debates just for click bait although I am very opinionated and passionate.

Let's discuss more basketball on next week!
